George Phillies was born July 23, 1947 in Buffalo, New York, first son of Eustace G. Phillies, M.D. and Clara Phillies. Phillies grew up in Kenmore and Williamsville, New York, finished as salutatorian at the Williamsville Central High School [now Williamsville North], and went to M.I.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While at MIT, Phillies earned degrees of Bachelor of Science in physics and in life sciences, as well as Master of Science and (in 1973) Doctor of Science degrees in physics. Phillies then joined the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program as a researcher.
In 1975, Phillies moved to California, working as a postdoctoral fellow in the U.C.L.A. Chemistry department. Phillies in 1978 moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was employed as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. In 1985, after declining alternatives at nationally-known schools, Phillies moved to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Physics. Phillies has attained international recognition for his scientific studies of light scattering, soaps, and polymer solutions. [Phillies: A polymer is a long thin molecule, shaped like a strand of spaghetti. A polymer solution pours very slowly. An engineer uses the pouring to design machines. A physicist asks 'Why do molecules shaped like spaghetti strands pour slowly?']

Almost all first-rate universities are run by elected faculty committees, and WPI is no exception. Phillies has repeatedly been elected to the most important WPI committees. Some years ago, at a meeting of the WPI Faculty, WPI Provost Diran Apelian opened his remarks `George, you are the conscience of the WPI Faculty'.

In 1971, Phillies joined the United States Army Reserves, eventually rising to the rank of Specialist, 5th Class, a rank that no longer exists, in a Boston unit, the 338th Medical Detachment. He received an honorable discharge in 1977.

In 1994, the Libertarian Party gained major-party status in Massachusetts. Phillies has since participated actively in Libertarian Party organizing efforts in Central and Western Massachusetts. In 1996, he was elected Executive Director of the Massachusetts Libertarian Association, and was the party nominee for United States Senator from Massachusetts. In 1998, he ran for Congress as a Libertarian against Democratic Party incumbent Jim McGovern and Republican Matt Amorello. One of his three-way debates was later carried coast to coast on CSPAN-II, @7PM EST, the Thursday before the election. In 2004, Phillies was elected as one of the two Regular members of the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts State Committee. In 2006, Phillies was re-elected to the LPMA State Committee, where he was elected to be Vice Chair of the State Party

I have a question regarding the housing market. California along with several other states are experiencing a major crisis is the housing Market. There are far too many foreclosures and there is nothing that we in the Mortgage Industry can do to help. Most properties in California are not worth their original purchase price. We have numerous requests to refinance to get out of a high interest rate or simply get locked into a fixed rate after their fixed period expires but they can't. Not because of bad credit or missed payments or even because they did 100% financing when they purchased, its just that the value is not there. Our government has not came up with any form of program to help them. These are folks that care about their credit and don't want a late payment on their record but if we cant help them out they will eventually have lates on the mortgage and when it gets to be to much they may go into foreclosure. Something should be done maybe a government funded subordinate 2nd that would take the balance of what is not within the value and possibly make it a silent second due and payable if the buyer sells or refinances to cash out. Even if this government silent 2nd comes with an interest it is certainly better than losing your home or ruining your good credit. Your thoughts on this matter are much appreciated. Any advise you may have on who to direct with this issue? Thank you for your time Lillian

Medical Care Expenses - Why is health insurance so expensive? One large reason is cost transfers. Hospitals are required to give free medical care to large numbers of people who have no insurance. They pay for that care by charging it to the people who have insurance. Cost transfers should be made illegal: Your insurance should only pay for your care. If a hospital is required by law to provide free care, the legal requirement should come with the money to pay for that care. Also, all medical care costs should have the same tax basis: No matter whether your employer pays for your insurance, you pay for insurance, or you pay for medical costs, those payments should be excluded from your taxable income.

Civil Liberties - The Oath of Office of the President is to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States. When a President takes office, he should place his hand on one place: the Constitution and the Bill of Rights he is swearing to protect. When an Advisor tells the President "The Constitution is not a suicide pact" as a justification for his illegal deeds, he is urging that our government be overthrown. The President should appoint officials and advisors who support the Constitution.

A Loyal, Patriotic Civil Service - Loyal Americans honor our Constitution and obey the Law of the land. They do not make warrantless searches of your home. They do not wiretap your phone calls without court orders. They do not throw Americans into jail and detain them without trial or access to attorneys. We need a Federal government composed of loyal Americans who love our country. Federal employees who made warrantless searches, performed warrantless wiretaps, and detained citizens without trial should be replaced with patriotic Americans. And then the facts of their actions should be presented to grand juries.

Presidential Royalism - We have a President, not an Emperor. Americans who dissent from elected Federal officers are true patriots who understand where America was born. Advocates of Free Speech zones, into which protesters are herded and hidden from the press, are dangerous subversives who are attacking our Constitution. Patriotic Americans do not grovel. They should not mindlessly stand and applaud because a President walks into the room. [Mind you, if you want to stand, applaud, or throw yourself on your kneepads, that's your privilege.] We should reject royalism.

Torture. Rendition. Secret Prisons. - These are all UnAmerican activities. Real Americans do not torture. Real Americans do not kidnap so others can torture for us. Real Americans support timely public trials with juries, not military kangaroo tribunals. We real Americans should ensure that torture, renditions, and secret prisons are ended, and the people who committed crimes to torture, rend, and secretly imprison are brought to justice.

Marriage - The Federal government has no business regulating marriage. The Defense of Marriage Act and other similar Federal Laws and executive orders should be repealed. On the same line, there is no legitimate military interest in the sexual inclinations of soldiers, sailors, or airmen, and military regulations on this topic should be repealed. When the government forces some religions to follow the religious beliefs of other religions, by regulating who may marry whom, it is committing unAmerican acts of religious persecution. On one hand, I defend freedom of religion for people who hate the practices of other religions. On the other hand, I reject the demands of some religions that the power of government be used to persecute other faiths.

Thanks for the comments. I will try to provide answers from what the candidate has said in the past.
