George Phillies for President 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thursday, September 13, 2007 George Phillies to Address Boston Freedom Rally The 18th annual Boston Freedom Rally, the largest and oldest Massachusetts rally for the re-legalization of marijuana, takes place Saturday, September 15, from noon to 6 pm on the Boston Common. At least 50,000 people are expected to attend. Leading Libertarian Presidential candidate George Phillies is scheduled to speak at 2pm. Phillies is a well known Libertarian activist and an outspoken opponent of prohibition for marijuana. "The government's role is to arbitrate between the rights of individuals, to say where my rights end and my neighbor's begin," says George Phillies. "To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, for my neighbor to smoke marijuana or gamble neither breaks my leg nor takes money from my purse. For those instances where he does overstep the rights of others, for example if he drives while intoxicated or steals money to gamble, we have other laws in place." Legalization of "victimless" activities like smoking marijuana or gambling has long been considered an important issue amongst Libertarians, who promote freedom and personal responsibility. "Drug prohibition is a total failure that wastes tens of billions of dollars, gives criminal records to millions of Americans, and can't even keep drugs out of our prisons," The candidate added. "It's time to treat marijuana the way we treat alcohol." LPMass, the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts, will have a tent in zone A, at the eastern end of the display line, with literature not only on the legalization issue but on other issues of concern in the coming Presidential election.
